Course Guide
Purpose of the Quarter
Quarter 2 focuses on the transformation of our daily lives as followers of Jesus. Discipleship is not only about what we believe but about how we live. In this section, we turn to Christian character, putting off the old self and putting on the new, as described in Colossians 3 and Ephesians 4. Each class explores qualities that reflect Christ’s nature, such as compassion, kindness, humility, patience, love, peace, faithfulness, and self-control.
These are not merely good habits to strive for; they are the fruit of a life surrendered to the Spirit of God. This quarter is designed to help students allow Christ’s character to be formed in them so that their faith is not just inward but expressed outwardly in everyday living.
Class Preparation / Reflection
Weekly Class Preparation
Session Review: Continue to review the Teacher Guide for each week’s class. It will provide insight into the lesson and guidance for class discussions. Take time to study the lesson thoroughly so you are comfortable with the content. You will still want to be prepared for questions and the after-class discussion time.
Prepare Handouts: Print enough copies for each student, plus a few extras. If the lesson includes a Reflection Worksheet, print those as well.
Reflection
Now is a good time to reflect on the group's progress, your teaching style, logistics, hospitality, and other aspects. What is going well each week? What needs improvement?
In the Quarter 1 review, was there any feedback from students that can help you improve the class in some way? Are the students retaining the teachings? Are they following through with working the information into their lives?
Do you feel burned out? Are you supported in your role?
Facilitating Group Discussion
By now, your group culture has taken form. Are you happy with it? If not, what needs to change? Do you have an environment where everyone feels encouraged to speak and engage honestly with one another? If it is going well, is there anything you can do to make it even better? Is it too predictable? What can you do to make it more engaging?
Final Note
This quarter invites students to take an honest look at their character and how it aligns with the life of Christ. At times, this can feel discouraging if students sense that each class is simply pointing out their shortcomings. As the teacher, be intentional with the tone. These classes should always feel encouraging, hopeful, and supportive. The goal is not to criticize but to inspire growth.
